Goals
The goal of this course is to introduce the student to the relevant modern theories in the field of the economic analysis of technological change.
Description
This course gives an overview of the recent literature on the economics of technological change. We discuss the neoclassical literature on technological change, as well as neo-Schumpeterian and more evolutionary approaches to technology. The course begins with a broad introduction about the nature of the relationship between technological change and the economy, including a broad historical overview of the impact of technology on the economy. It then takes a micro economic approach, introducing such topics as patents and other intellectual property rights, market structure and competition, and the diffusion of technologies. It then moves on to the macro level, addressing topics such as the impact of technology on employment, and an in-depth coverage of the process of economic growth. The course concludes with an overview of policy aimed at the technology – economy relationship.
