* Develop insights with respect to the BI lifecycle in organizations, ranging from ETL to end user applications

In the course "Business Intelligence Systems" students learn about the myriad of ways organizations collect, store, manage and analyse data as well as the foundational technologies of the Big Data era. While talk of Big Data and its applications is dominating the headlines of the business press, many organizations struggle with organizing their corporate data and managing it in a strategic, efficient and ethical manner.
In this course students will become familiar with all aspects of the Business Intelligence lifecycle, ranging from the initial extract, transform and load (ETL) processes over data storage to the final end-user application. In doing so we will discuss about different database and file management systems such traditional relational databases, but also more recent non-relational databases such as NoSQL databases or the Hadoop File System. We will further discuss and analyse the ethical implications of organizational data collection and storage and how legislative developments such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) or the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) have impacted organizational behaviour.
