Insight in basic economic concepts and tools, and the ability to apply them to the real world.
The course "Economics and Business" introduces economic principles and concepts. The following topics are addressed in lectures and tutorials: supply and demand analysis, perfect competition, trade, monopoly, oligopoly, game theory, and elements of macroeconomics.
The course will use an introductory economics text book. The book will be announced in early October.
Since Economics and Business is a first-year class, the presentation avoids the use of advanced mathematical concepts. However, knowledge of basic mathematical concepts such as solving equations, reading and working with graphs, manipulating inequalities, or basic calculus is an indispensable prerequisite.
If you feel that you have deficiencies in mathematics, here are two splendid textbooks:
(1) Chiang, A.C., & Wainwright, K. (2005): Fundamental Methods in Mathematical Economics;
(2) Sydsæter, K., Hammond, P. J., & Carvajal Andrés M. (2016). Essential mathematics for economic analysis (Fifth). Pearson Education. (available as ebook at the UM library)
In addition, an advanced level of English is required.
